About Yuvan Shankar Raja

Yuvan Shankar Raja is an Indian singer-songwriter and composer who was born on August 31, 1979. Along with a few Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi movies, his primary musical compositions are for Tamil movies. Though he is a versatile composer, he is most recognized for his use of Western musical elements.

He is also frequently credited with bringing hip hop to the Tamil film and music industries and kicking off the “era of remixes” in Tamil Nadu, which featured jazz and EDM mixed connected. He is often called the “Young Maestro” and the “BGM King” of Tamil film music. Yuvan is the recipient of three Vijay Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, five Mirchi Music Awards South, and two Filmfare Awards South.

Yuvan has contributed to more than 170 films in over twenty-five years. He started his musical career in 1996, at the age of 16, by writing the soundtrack for the movie Aravindhan. He is the youngest son of composer Ilaiyaraaja.

He made his breakthrough with the soundtrack of Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002), and by the mid-2000s, he had become one of the most in-demand composers for Tamil cinema. For his work on the drama 7G Rainbow Colony, he was awarded the 2004 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil. He made history in 2006 as the only Indian composer to win the Cyprus International Film Festival Award for Raam’s soundtrack. For his Telugu musical Oy!, he was also the 2009 winner of the Filmfare Special Award – South. In addition to founding his own film production company, YSR Films, in 2017, Yuvan founded his own record company, U1 Records, in 2015.

Early Life: On August 31, 1979, Yuvan Shankar Raja was born. Ilaiyaraaja is a musician and film composer. He is the third and youngest of his children. The playback singer-music director Bhavatharini and music director Karthik Raja have a younger brother named him. At one point, Yuvan acknowledged that his brother Karthik Raja was a more gifted musician than he was, but that was because he did not have a “good team to work with” and could not break through in the music industry.

He has directed his siblings’ and father’s singing of numerous songs. He is related to film composer and director Gangai Amaran and R. D. Bhaskar through their sons Venkat Prabhu, Premgi Amaren, and Parthi Bhaskar, who are also employed in the Tamil film industry.

Yuvan Shankar attended St. Bede’s British Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, where he finished his studies after the tenth grade. He began taking piano lessons at “Musee Musical” in Chennai, which is connected to Trinity College in London, UK, where he first learned music from Jacob Master.

Yuvan Shankar Raja said that although he grew up “with music around him,” he ultimately became a musician. He had always wanted to be a pilot and travel “all over the world.” Along with other composers like S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, M. S. Viswanathan, and Naushad Ali, as well as singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, P. B. Sreenivas, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, and P. Susheela, he is inspired by the work of his father.
