About Yuvan Shankar Raja

Yuvan Shankar Raja is an Indian singer-songwriter and composer who was born on August 31, 1979. Along with a few Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi movies, his primary musical compositions are for Tamil movies. Though he is a versatile composer, he is most recognized for his use of Western musical elements.

He is also frequently credited with bringing hip hop to the Tamil film and music industries and kicking off the “era of remixes” in Tamil Nadu, which featured jazz and EDM mixed connected. He is often called the “Young Maestro” and the “BGM King” of Tamil film music. Yuvan is the recipient of three Vijay Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, five Mirchi Music Awards South, and two Filmfare Awards South.

He made his breakthrough with the soundtrack of Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002), and by the mid-2000s, he had become one of the most in-demand composers for Tamil cinema. For his work on the drama 7G Rainbow Colony, he was awarded the 2004 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil. He made history in 2006 as the only Indian composer to win the Cyprus International Film Festival Award for Raam’s soundtrack. For his Telugu musical Oy!, he was also the 2009 winner of the Filmfare Special Award – South. In addition to founding his own film production company, YSR Films, in 2017, Yuvan founded his own record company, U1 Records, in 2015.

He began taking piano lessons at “Musee Musical” in Chennai, which is connected to Trinity College in London, UK, where he first learned music from Jacob Master.
