About Thalapathy Vijay

Born on June 22, 1974, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, better known by his stage name Vijay, is an Indian actor and playback singer who appears in Tamil films. Vijay has acted in over 65 films in the duration of his career, which has spanned just over three decades. He is one of the most financially successful actors in Tamil cinema, having appeared in several of the highest-grossing Tamil films ever as well as being among those with the highest salaries in India.

Director S. A. Chandrasekhar, who was born in Madras, first cast Vijay as a child actor in the 1984 Tamil film Vetri. At the age of eighteen, he landed his first lead role in the 1992 film Naalaiya Theerpu, following several child roles in his father’s productions.

For the next few years, Vijay kept playing lead roles with varying degrees of success. Notable movies that he starred in were Poove Unakkaga, Love Today, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, Thulladha Manamum Thullum, and Kushi. In 1998, the Tamil Nadu government bestowed upon him the title of Kalaimaamani.

With the success of Thirupaachi and Pokkiri, he went on to become one of the most prominent and lucrative actors in Tamil cinema. In 2003, he starred in Ghilli, which became the first Tamil film to gross over ₹500 million. Vijay, who is known as “Thalapathy” (transl. commander), has a sizable fan base. Vijay declared in February 2024 that he was leaving the movie industry and going into politics with the launch of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

Childhood and Family: On June 22, 1974, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, Vijay was born as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar. The film director S. A. Chandrasekhar is his father, and the playback singer and vocalist Shoba Chandrasekhar is his mother. While his mother is Hindu, his father is of Christian heritage. Vidhya, Vijay’s sister, passed away when she was just two years old. Vijay completed his education at Balalok School in Virugambakkam after first attending Fathima School in Kodambakkam. Yuvan Shankar Raja is an Indian singer-songwriter and composer who was born on August 31, 1979. Along with a few Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi movies, his primary musical compositions are for Tamil movies. Though he is a versatile composer, he is most recognized for his use of Western musical elements. He is also frequently credited with bringing hip hop to the Tamil film and music industries and kicking off the “era of remixes” in Tamil Nadu, which featured jazz and EDM mixed in tandem. He is often called the “Young Maestro” and the “BGM King” of Tamil film music.

Yuvan is the recipient of three Vijay Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, five Mirchi Music Awards South, and two Filmfare Awards South.

Yuvan has contributed to more than 170 films in twenty-five years of work. He started his musical career in 1996, at the age of 16, by writing the soundtrack for the movie Aravindhan. He is the youngest son of composer Ilaiyaraaja.
