The Weeknd made a clue about an impending project in March 2016 when he said that a “chapter” of his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), was finished. Growth and arrangement
Having initially encountered Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of Daft Punk, at a party in Los Angeles, the Weeknd had long yearned to work with the duo before they began working collectively. He said, “I just wanted to get into the studio with them. I didn’t even care if we made music. I just wanted to be friends,” to Variety’s Jem Aswad. In fact, I spent more time partying with Guy-Man than working with him when we initially met while out on the town in Los Angeles.
He would tell me, over drinks and loud music, how much he admired my work.
