About Hadiqa Kiani
Born on August 11, 1972, Hadiqa Kiani TI(c) is a Pakistani singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer, actress, and philanthropist. Her Urdu and Punjabi namesake are حدیقہ کیانی. She has performed at The Kennedy Center and Royal Albert Hall and won multiple accolades both domestically and abroad. For her services to the music industry, Kiani was granted the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2006, the fourth-highest civilian award in Pakistan. She became the first woman in Pakistan to be appointed as a Goodwill ambassador to the UN when she was named a 2010 UNDP Goodwill Ambassador.
As part of their “Power” edition, the nation’s top news organization, Jang Group of Newspapers, named Kiani one of “Pakistan’s Most Powerful and Influential Women” in 2016.
Early years and profession
Kiani, along with her sister Sasha and older brother Irfan Kiani, was the youngest of three siblings when she was born in Rawalpindi. At three years old, her father passed away. The poet Khawar Kiani, her mother, was the headmistress of a government school for girls. As a student at Viqar-un-Nisa Noon Girls High School, Kiani performed for crowds of thousands of people worldwide and won multiple prizes while representing Pakistan at international children’s festivals in Greece, Jordan, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Additionally, Kiani appeared in PTV’s weekly musical Rang Barangi Dunya, a children’s program hosted by Sohail Rana.
Moving from her birthplace of Rawalpindi to Lahore as an eighth grader, Kiani pursued her classical study with Ustad Faiz Ahmed Khan and Wajid Ali Nashad. Kiani went on to graduate from two of Pakistan’s most prestigious universities: the venerable Government College University (Lahore) awarded her master’s degree in psychology after she had received her bachelor’s from Kinnaird College for Women University.
Kiani first appeared on television in the early 1990s as the host of the children’s music show Angan Angan Taray. She hosted the show with acclaimed music composer Amjad Bobby for three and a half years, and later with music composer Khalil Ahmed, during which she sang over a thousand songs for children. Kiani received the designation of “A+ artist” from PTV, joining the ranks of Noor Jehan, Naheed Akhtar, and Mehnaz, due to the overwhelming volume of songs she sang during the show. Additionally, Kiani had an appearance on NTM as a VJ for the music charts show Video Junction.
In the early 1990s, Kiani started performing playback vocals for motion pictures. One of the most well-known films she sang for was Sargam, a popular Pakistani film starring and scored by Adnan Sami Khan. She won other accolades for her playback vocals that same year, including the esteemed Nigar Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.
