About Neeti Mohan Sharma

Indian singer Neeti Mohan Sharma was born on November 18, 1979. She has sung songs in Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi, English, and mostly in Hindi and Tamil movies. She became well-known after singing “Ishq Wala Love” for Student of the Year (2012). She went on to win the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent and was nominated for Best Female Playback Singer for the Jab Tak Hai Jaan song “Jiya Re” (2012).

Childhood and upbringing

Delhi is where Neeti Mohan was born. Her mother, Kusum, stays at home while her father, Brij Mohan Sharma, works for the government.

Out of the four sisters, Neeti Mohan is the oldest: Shakti, Mukti, and Kriti. Mohan started attending the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya to study music. She was active in dancing and dramatics at the time, viewing singing as a “serious hobby”.

Mohan played in the school band and marched in the Delhi Republic Day celebration for five consecutive years. Mohan was persuaded by her father to take part in a variety of extracurricular activities in school, including dancing, singing, and acting in the theater and band.

One of the winners of Channel V’s reality TV series Popstars in 2003, Mohan went on to be selected for Aasma, a pop group formed with the other show winners, where she shared the stage with Bryan Adams. While she was helping Lobo, Deepak Gattani, the person in charge of A. R. Rahman’s concert tours, insisted that Mohan play a supporting role in Imtiaz Ali’s film, Socha Na Tha (2005), with Lobo serving as the choreographer for the movie.

Mohan took part in the Star Plus competition Music Ka Maha Muqqabla in 2009, where she was a member of the Shankar Mahadevan-led winning team “Shankar’s Rockstars”. On February 15, 2019, she wed the actor, Nihaar Pandya.

In an open conversation with TV anchor Amin Dhillon, which has received over 400K views on social media, Mohan revealed the little-known tale of how A. R. Rahman found her. On New Year’s Eve 2006, Mohan’s sister Shakti was dancing in an A. R. Rahman production. Before the show, Mohan had received a call from Shakti, and he had hoped to talk to Rahman but was unable to do so.

Rather than that, she informed her sister that she would eventually perform with Rahman, and that six months later, Mohan would be singing with him. In 2007, Mohan ran into Rahman again as he was leaving the movie theater. Mohan had previously met Rahman’s manager while she was a member of the group Aasma. Mohan believed that Rahman called her for recording the song, since she has shown “a lot of spirit” in the shows she did with him, and the song features a girl—played by Anushka Sharma—enacting the song “very spunky”. Koimoi’s Shivi mentioned that Mohan’s “refreshing voice delivers the track with lot of enthusiasm and variations”. Though “Ishq Wala Love” was released earlier, Mohan’s first recorded Hindi song was “Jiya Re”. both songs were declared chartbusters upon release. Indian songwriter Shayra Apoorva has primarily contributed to Bollywood productions. With the short film Pihu, which starred TV actress Sanaya Irani, she made her lyrical debut. Songwriting credits for films like Mansukh Chaturvedi ki Aatmakatha and Pakhi go to Shayra.

In addition, she wrote the lyrics for a number of music videos released by the Zee Music label, such as the one for the song “Naino Tale,” which starred Jannat Zubair, a rising star.
